1. General Information

Since 1973 one of the most important features of the Institute has been the organization of Annual
Sessions, consisting of lectures and seminars that deal with contemporary problems of international
law and international relations.
Each Session consists of courses and seminars which each time refer to a general subject of international
law and international relations. The Sessions, which are held at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
during the first three weeks of September, are designed to benefit: senior officers and officials of international
organizations, diplomats, administration officers, judges, lawyers, academics and students of Law and
Political, Economic and Social Sciences and other persons having a particular interest in international law
and international relations or in the specific topic of the given annual session.

One of the main aspects of these sessions is the presentation by young scholars of papers or "travaux
pratiques" on a specific subject related to the general subject of the lectures of the session. The topics
must be approved by one of the tutors who supervise and conduct the special sittings of the "travaux
pratiques". After their presentation, the young scholars may be given the opportunity to publish their work
in the 2nd part of the Collected Courses (Thesaurus Acroasium) of the session.

Eminent professors of international law and high officials of international organizations are cooperating
and a limited number of scholarships is available.

2. Scholarships

Scholarships cover bed and breakfast during the three weeks of the session.
Applications for scholarships must reach the Secretariat by June 15 at the latest.
Every application must be typewritten and accompanied by two recommendations one of which must
be from a professor of international law. The recommendation letters must be closed or sent directly to
the Institute by the recommending persons. All applications will be submitted to the Secretariat.

A committee will examine the candidatures which have reached the Institute within the appointed time.
The committee will establish, in the exercise of its entire discretion, the list of those who are to receive
scholarships and is in no way bound by information or recommendations addressed to it. Its decisions
shall be communicated to the applicants by June 30 at the latest.

Care is taken not to grant scholarships to more than one person from each country. This rule does not
apply to scholarships instituted by private persons or institutions, the award of which has been entrusted
to the committee. The holders must attend the lectures during the entire period of three weeks and receive
personally the certificates of attendance or the diplomas on Friday evening of the last week of the
courses, to be granted by a member of the Government and the Rector of the Aristotle University
of Thessaloniki. The participants and particularly the holders of scholarships are encouraged to bring
along their national costumes for the various festivities during the session.

3. Accommodation

Participants are free to make their own arrangements for accommodation. Thessaloniki is a large city
offering a variety of hotels and restaurants serving a variety of dishes at moderate prices.

However, as there are several traditional festivities during the period of the session, hotels are usually
fully booked as tourists from all over Greece and abroad visit the city. It is, therefore, advisable to
make arrangements for accommodation as soon as possible.

To avoid any difficulties concerning room and board for participants during the three weeks of the teaching
period, the Institute has arranged for some rooms in a private hotel (prices are subject to change without
prior notice). Upon receiving the registration forms duly filled in, the Secretariat of the Institute will make
all necessary arrangements for accommodation taking primary notice of the date that forms have been sent
in. All registration forms should be sent by July 30.

4. Examination and Certificates

The Institute awards two different kinds of Certificates:
	a) the Certificate of Attendance of the teaching programme in International Law and International
Relations, awarded to all regular participants of each teaching period who also participate in the
"travaux pratiques" of the annual session
and
	b) the Certificate of Successful Examination in International Law and International Relations and
in the particular topic of the annual session, awarded to participants who pass the Institute's
written and oral examinations.

The Institute's examinations are held at the end of every teaching session, in English or French,
by a jury consisting of the Director of the Institute, four internationalists appointed by the Governing
Board of the Institute among the teaching staff of its Sessions, selecting also the subjects for the
examinations.

Only candidates who hold a university degree and possess an advanced knowledge of international
law and international relations will be permitted to take the Institute's examinations provided that:
	a) they have participated in the Institute's annual session
and
	b) they have participated in the "travaux pratiques" organized during the course of the session
and submitted a paper judged by the tutors as adequate or satisfactory.

The list of candidates admitted to the examination is drawn by the Secretariat announcing also the
time and place of the written examination. Participants admitted to the list of candidates must pay
to the Secretariat a fee of 100 €. This sum is not refund even if the candidate fails to present him/herself
for the whole or any part of the examinations. Only those candidates who succeed in the written examinations
may present themselves to the orals.

The written examinations consist of:
	a) one four hours' essay, relating to international law and international
relations. Candidates may choose the subject out of two proposed by the examiners.
	b) one two hours' essay, relating to the particular subject of the given annual
session

The oral examinations consist of questions set by the examiners in relation to international law
and international relations in general and in particular to the subject of the specific session.

Marks are given within the scale of 0-10. Pass mark is 6. The examiners mark the candidates at
their own discretion and their decision is final and subject to no review.
